A 37-year-old University of Lethbridge professor faces a sexual assault charge following an investigation into a female student's allegation.

In November 2015, a 23-year-old woman reported she had been sexually assaulted by one of her professors in December of the previous year. The woman says she was assaulted during an event that occurred off-campus.

A Lethbridge Police Service investigation into the allegations resulted in a sexual assault charge against 37-year-old Nicholas Hanson.

The University of Lethbridge has suspended Hanson, a member of the university's theatre and dramatic arts department, with pay pending the outcome of the court proceedings in relation to the 'very serious charge'.

"An internal investtigation has been initiated by the University," said U of L officials in a statement. "The University is committed to providing an environment in which sexual violence is not tolerated."

University officials say the complainant has completed her degree requirements and no longer attends the school. "The Universiy has offered support to the complainant and will continue to do so as long as is necessary."

Hanson has been released from custody under the condition he does not contact the victim. Hanson is scheduled to appear in court on June 9.
