A 41-year-old man is facing charges in a voyeurism investigation involving a neighbour who lives in the same southwest apartment complex.

Chad Berry Robert Stone is charged with voyeurism and luring a child by telecommunication.

Police were called to a home in the 2500 block of 98 Avenue S.W.  at about 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, for reports of a problem with a neighbor.

A 14-year-old girl living in the Oakridge apartment complex alleged that a neighbor had been sending her inappropriate text messages for about a year.

Police say the neighbour was a family acquaintance and that the girl and her family have known him for awhile.

“Mr. Stone had lived in this complex for a considerable number of years, He had known this family for several years, approximately six years, and so in addition to being a neighbour, he was a close acquaintance of this family and he was invited into the home on occasions prior to the date of the offence,” said CPS District 6 Insp. Chris Butler.

The girl also found a camera in a vent in the bathroom floor of her home in March and told police she believed her neighbour had installed it during a previous visit.

Police executed a search warrant on a residence in the same building on Sunday, April 6 and seized a substantial amount of technological-related items.

“We’re looking at all of these different aspects. Not only on what information is going to be on the devices which were seized as a result of the warrant, but also how he managed to get himself into the residence, how long he was in the residence, how he was able to install this device where he did. We’re looking at all of these different factors and that will form part of the investigation,” said Butler.

Police say they are not concerned that Stone is out on bail while he awaits his day in court.

“I am aware that a lot of the residents in that building have a high degree of anxiety. They’re concerned over what happened and I understand that. Certainly if I was in their position, I would feel the same way,” said Butler.

He adds that even so, they will not tolerate vigilante behavior.

“We will not tolerate any vigilantism and so that certainly is a caution that I want to put out there, is although, I understand the concern of the people that live in that area, we’re not going to tolerate criminal misconduct. We will lay appropriate charges if there’s vigilantism that is criminal in nature.”

Stone was released with conditions and police say they will monitor him to make sure he complys. They have also stepped up directed patrols in the area.

Chad Stone will appear in court on the charges on Wednesday May 7th.
