Calgary police have one man in custody following a crash on Glenmore Trail that claimed the life of one man and sent four other people to hospital on Sunday afternoon.

At about 4:30 p.m., emergency crews were called to the scene of a crash on westbound Glenmore Trail just before the turnoff for Crowchild Trail.

The incident shut down all traffic through the area for nearly six hours as police remained at the scene to complete their investigation.

Calgary EMS says that three vehicles were involved in the crash, and a man in his 60s was killed.

"On arrival, EMS determined there were at least six patients between three vehicles involved," said EMS spokesperson Stuart Brideaux. "EMS has taken two people to the Rocky View Hospital, a man and a woman each in their 40s, in stable and non-life threatening condition."

Brideaux also told CTV that there were a number of witnesses who saw what happened.

"Although this was a Sunday, there were a number of witnesses and traffic in the area of the collision. However, the Traffic Section is still sorting through all the factors that may have led to this."

Investigators say one driver tried to change lanes and sideswiped a vehicle. The truck he was driving then crossed the median into oncoming traffic, crashing head-on with a Jeep.

Police have arrested one driver, who is suspected of impaired driving.

He was taken to the District 2 office for a breathalyzer test. Charges are pending.

Four other people were taken to hospital as well; a man and a woman in their 50s are in serious condition and a man and a woman in their 40s in stable condition.

Officials say a woman, who was in the same vehicle as the man who died, underwent significant amount of surgery to be treated for her wounds.

All lanes on Glenmore Trail have been reopened.

The name of the male victim has not been released.

Police are asking anyone who may have seen the crash to call them.
