The airport tunnel is on budget and on schedule say city officials. The project has reached a milestone; half the concrete needed for the tunnel has been poured. The construction began on the tunnel last year and should be completed in 2014.

They have been working twelve hours a day, seven days a week, cement trucks coming and going from the airport tunnel project. The first pour occurred back in February and late last week they hit the half way point.  Since the controversial $294.8 million project got the go ahead from council more than 22,000 cubic meters of concrete has been poured since the first tunnel section was completed.

Once completed, the tunnel will accommodate six lanes of traffic and will extend Airport Trail from Barlow Trail to 36th Street NE.  Each section of the tunnel requires 850 cubic meters of concrete, about 80 trucks worth.

There are more construction deadlines coming up fast.  The goal is to have the tunnel portion of construction completed by the end of August, so that work can begin on the runaway above it.  Then the runway must be completed by the end if October so that taxiway construction can begin.  The project is scheduled to be completed by May of 2014.

And late today Calgary Airport Authority announced their development program is also on schedule and on budget. There are two major projects underway, the runways and the international facilities project.
