Going into the long weekend, drivers will need to contend with more than just high gas prices.

Officers in and around Calgary are getting ready for the crackdown on dangerous drivers this long weekend, trying to keep roads safe and accident free.

CTV spoke with Cpl. Darrin Turnbull with the Airdrie RCMP who says they’ll be out all weekend.

“We’re going to be out here looking for impaired drivers, looking for dangerous or aggressive drivers, on all the highways in Alberta.”

Turnbull says they have stations set up all along Highway 2 between Calgary and Edmonton along with motorcycles and other unmarked and unconventional vehicles.

He says that the increased enforcement helps police get a good picture of driving habits of Albertans on the road.

They've also been juggling schedules to bring in extra officers to ensure there is an increased presence.

Turnbull says that there has been a decrease in the amount of fatalities on Alberta highways but they are still working hard to bring it down even more.

"We're working hard to keep up our enforcement and our education and trying to get people to abide by the traffic laws so that they're safe and they arrive home safely."

Drivers are also asked to keep mindful of construction zones and watch for workers in those zones.
