The Kainai First Nation near Lethbridge is establishing a temporary drug consumption site after a state of emergency was called in the community on Friday.

The Tribe’s Department of Health is setting up the site to try to reduce the number of overdoses.

The consumption site will be monitored by three staff members and will be operated like other sites in the province but on a smaller scale.

“What we're about really is saving lives right now, that’s our first charge I believe. We have wellness staff, we have community health staff, we have harm reduction staff, they're all working really hard again but the focus during this crisis period is saving lives,” said Kevin Cowan, Blood Tribe Department of Health.

The trailer is being built in Calgary and health officials hope people who are using drugs in the community will go to the site once it opens.
