Leader of the Alberta’s NDP Brian Mason has announced he would be stepping down this fall, opening the way for a fresh face for the party.

Mason made the announcement in Edmonton on Tuesday morning.

He says the new leader is what the NDP needs to take advantage of the political situation in the province.

Mason has been an MLA since 2000 and leader since 2004.

The party hasn’t been able to capitalize on instability under Ed Stelmach and Alison Redford, but he says that now is the time to make real inroads.

“I’m proud of the work we’ve done, but I believe it’s time for a new leader to tackle the changing political landscape and lead us into the next election,” he told a press conference.

Mason expects to officially step down in October but he will stay on as representative of his Edmonton riding.

He says he hasn’t ruled out running in the next election.
