A couple from Calgary has died after being swept away by a powerful wave in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

The pair was on a beach known for its strong currents with several family members when a powerful wave struck and dragged them out to sea.

Dale McDougall, 62, and his wife Linda, 59, were on land on Divorce Beach when the wave hit.

Family members caught the attention of nearby boats and they were able to pull Linda McDougall from the ocean. Paramedics at the beach started resuscitation, but she later died at a local hospital.

Authorities say the Mexican Navy pulled Dale McDougall's body from the ocean.

Dale worked at a Ford dealership in the city for more than 25 years and Linda was a local dog trainer.

The manager at Metro Ford says they have offered time off to employees who need it and they have made grief counselors available.

CTV News has also learned that the Red Cross is now trying to help bring the bodies back to Canada.
