An unseasonably dry start to December has helped the City of Calgary’s snow and ice control (SNIC) program gain traction on its annual budgeted allowance with just over two weeks remaining on the calendar.

According to the City, $34.3 million (approximately 90 per cent of the budget) has been spent of the program’s $38.1 million budget this year.

The last designated snow event of 2017 occurred in November and the response cost an estimated $469,000 including $15,000 paid to contractors.

With snow in the forecast over the coming weeks, the City says snow removal equipment is ready to go and the warm conditions of late will reduce the amount of precursory road preparations required before the snowflakes begin to fall.

With consideration for the likelihood of snow event responses in the second half of December, the City of Calgary still expects the SNIC program to come in slightly under budget for 2017.
