Residents in a southeast neighbourhood are making moves to oust a former Calgary police officer with a history of sexual abuse from their community.

Stephen Huggett, 59, was arrested last Tuesday and charged with one count each of invitation to sexual touching with a child under 14 years and sexual interference with a child under 14 years.

The former Calgary police officer has a history of sexual abuse and spent nine months in jail in 2009 for possession of child pornography. He was also charged in January 2013 with sexual assault with a firearm, extortion, criminal harassment and possession of child pornography.

Huggett's neighbours don't want him around now that he's charged with molesting a seven-year old girl more than two decades ago.

He has lived in the same Willow Park home for years which is across the street from a school.

When Huggett was released from jail he was bound by court imposed conditions.

One of those conditions was that he could not live within 400 metres of a school or playground and his home is 402 metres from the school.

Some area residents have complained to Alberta's Solicitor General Jonathan Denis about Huggett’s close proximity to the elementary school.

“I’m hoping we can raise awareness of this particular issue because as you indicated he is a registered sex offender until 2019 and also part of his release terms include that he is not suppose to on a playground or in a school and those are public documents that anybody can see from the court,” said Denis.

Denis says he has no jurisdiction to force Huggett to move

“I recognize that he has to live somewhere but I'm hopeful he will move voluntarily and live somewhere not so close to kids and schools,” said Denis.

Huggett is currently out on bail on the latest charges and is scheduled to appear in court on August 29, 2013.
