Con artists are posing as agents for the Canada Revenue Agency.

The scam arrives via email and claims to offer a refund from the CRA.

The phony email states "After the last annual calculation of your fiscal activity we have determined that you are eligible to receive a tax refund of $386."

The email then includes a link and encourages you to click on it in order to process your refund.

The link takes you to a fake Canada Revenue Agency website which is identical to the real one.

The phony website asks for your social insurance number, name and birth date.

Armed with that information, anyone can steal your identity.

"It's tax time, people have taxes on their minds and might not think much about getting an email from the CRA and if they're short of cash, and might need an extra $300, they might let their guard down a bit," warns Daniel MacDonald from the Better Business Bureau.

The CRA will never request personal information by email.
