A Calgary woman wants people to be on the lookout for coyotes after her dog and brother were attacked by one.

Natalie Ruel says her Shitzu named Romeo was attacked by a coyote Wednesday evening.

The dog survived, but he's nursing a long nasty gash and several stitches.

Ruel's brother was taking the dog for a walk on its leash in Fish Creek Park when they were surprised by the wild animal.

Ruel wants to warn Calgarians to keep a close eye on their pets and small children.

"A coyote jumped out and started mauling my dog and my brother, who's a pretty big guy. He kicked the coyote twice in the head, the coyote stepped back a few feet and started following them home," said Ruel.

"We suspect there is a family of coyotes with young pups which is why they're being more aggressive," said Tony Thomas with Calgary Animal Bylaw Services.

The city encourages anyone who sees an aggressive coyote to call 311.
