Emergency crews had to rescue a crane operator after the arm of the mobile machine got snagged on power lines in the northwest.

Fire crews were called to the 9000 block of Bearspaw Dam Road at about 9:00 a.m. Thursday for reports of a downed line.

The boom of a mobile crane snagged the power lines while passing underneath and caused an adjoining power pole to shear off.

The downed lines then fell on the crane and the nearby railway tracks.

The crane operator was aware of the dangers and stayed in the vehicle until fire crews arrived.

Crews ordered the operator to stay where he was until the lines could be de-energized by Enmax.

The man was assessed for injuries by firefighters and was not hurt in the incident.

Rail traffic was shut down in both directions and electrical power was disrupted in the area while crews made repairs.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.
