Parks Canada crews are assisting their U.S. National Park Service counterparts in an attempt to manage a 10 hectare wildfire near the U.S. – Canada border.

The forest fire near Goat Haunt, Montana, is on the slopes of Campbell Mountain on the west side of Upper Waterton Lake.

Fire crews and two helicopters equipped with water buckets are battling the blaze in Glacier National Park.

Unseasonal weather is expected to assist the firefighting effort as Saturday’s forecast calls for precipitation and cooler temperatures.

Several sections of Waterton Lakes National Park are closed to the public including:

  • Lakeshore Trail (from townsite to Boundary Bay)
  • Bertha Lake trail
  • Alderson Lake trail
  • Carthew-Alderson trail (from Summit Lake to Alderson Lake)
  • Boundary Creek trail
  • Summit Lake trail

The extreme fire hazard within the park has prompted officials to issue a fire ban for all areas of the park including the Waterton townsite.
