Dozens of people congregated at St. Mark’s church in the northeast on Saturday afternoon to mourn the loss of a 20-year-old man, the victim of a crash involving an alleged drunk driver.

Francis Pesa had recently returned to Calgary from a trip to the Philippines where he had helped family members rebuild following Typhoon Haiyan.

Pesa was driving on Metis Trail on New Year’s Day when his car was struck by another vehicle. Pesa was transported to hospital by ambulance in critical, life-threatening condition.

Hundreds of friends lined the hospital hallway outside of Pesa’s room, praying for the 20-year-old’s recovery. Five days after the crash, Pesa succumbed to his injuries.

According to Pesa’s family, the young man would often offer to be the designated driver for his friends.
