Calgary fire crews are anticipating they’ll have to deal with a lot of issues involving burst water pipes now that the temperatures are heading upwards.

Movie theaters in Sunridge and Country Hills were evacuated and shut down for a period of time over the weekend when water was spotted pouring the ceiling.

Fire crews responded to the Sunridge Spectrum Theatre at about 3 p.m. and found pools of water in the main lobby.

Officials say this will only get worse as temperatures warm up.

“The big one we are waiting for right now is because we had such a sudden cold snap followed by what will eventually be a thaw,” says CFD Battalion Chief Al Magwood. “That’s when we’re really going to see the pipes coming alive right now. They have the ice blockes in there that are keeping the water where they should be. Once that thaws we’ll have water flowing all over the place.”

The fire department says they see this phenomenon every year, and improper maintenance is usually to blame.

All moviegoers whose shows were impacted by the flooding have been given a voucher for admission at another time.
