Continuing with efforts to prevent future flooding similar to the disaster that befell Calgary and area in late June, the Government of Alberta has decided on two firms to examine flood risk reduction measures.

AMEC and AECOM will look over several flood reduction options and assess their impacts.

The companies will then submit their findings in an attempt to reduce the impact of future floods.

“We know it is impossible to prevent floods from happening; however there’s a lot we can do to lessen the impact these events have on Alberta’s communities. This is a next step in our ongoing work to find the best ways to protect Albertans when flood waters threaten our homes in the future,” said Doug Griffiths, the Minister of Municipal Affairs.

The firms will be focusing primarily on the following areas:

  • risk reduction structure types and locations
  • area accessibility
  • impacts on property values
  • relocation of utilities
  • environmental impacts
  • community preferences

Officials say that special attention will be paid to public involvement and consultation throughout the process.
