Emergency crews were called to the scene of a fatal crash on Highway 1A just west of the community of Cochrane on Friday
Police and EMS were called the scene of a two vehicle crash on Highway 1A, or Bow Valley Trail, at Horse Creek Road at about 11:15 a.m.
One vehicle, with three occupants in it was travelling eastbound and a second was headed westbound with one occupant in it when the two vehicles crashed into each other.
The three pople in the eastbound vehicle had to be extricated from the wreckage and the male driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
The passengers suffered life-threatening injuries and EMS says a female patient was flown to hospital by STARS and a man was transported by ground ambulance.
The male driver of the westbound vehicle suffered multiple serious injuries but his condition was stabilized at the scene by paramedics.
All patients were transported to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary for treatment.
The investigation is still in its early stages but police are looking into whether or not alcohol played a factor in the crash.
Highway 1A was closed in both directions while police investigated but was reopened at about 2:30 p.m.
