The owners of several historic buildings in Calgary hit hard by flooding in June have been given an extension to complete grant applications that help maintain these important structures.
The Alberta Historical Resources Foundation (AHRF) has extended the deadline for applications to September 30 for owners of properties that:
- have been directly impacted by flooding;
- are included on a formally adopted Municipal Heritage Inventory, with a Statement of Significance; and,
- have been issued a Notice of Intention to designate as a Municipal Historic Resource by the applicable municipality.
“Owners of historic buildings and sites that have been impacted by the severe flooding in northern and southern Alberta are still in the midst of recovery,” said Alberta Culture Minister Heather Klimchuk in a release. “With the many challenges they are facing, extending the application deadline to September 30 will ensure they have the opportunity to apply for grants to assist in their conservation efforts.”
Some municipalities have also been unable to complete work toward designating some historic sites within their jurisdiction. Unfortunately, properties must be designated as either municipal or provincial historic resources in order to be given an AHRF grant.
The AHRF provides grants to individuals and organizations that preserve and interpret Alberta’s heritage through conservation, heritage awareness, publications, research grants, and scholarships.
The deadline of September 1 will remain in place for those facilities unaffected by June’s flooding.
