CTV has confirmed a man shot by police early Wednesday morning was previously convicted of killing two people in a hit and run.

A police source confirms the shooting victim is Louis Bear, a man previously convicted of fatally running down two people outside the Whiskey nightclub three years ago.

Bear was rushed to hospital after being shot twice by officers early Wednesday morning.

A man was driving a stolen car when they cornered him in an alley just off Memorial Drive and Edmonton Trail.

They believe he had just fled the scene of a robbery, where two men had been stabbed.

As police approached, investigators say the suspect tried to get away but he was blocked in.

"As one police vehicle made attempts to box in the suspect, other police officers approached the vehicle on foot. At this point, the suspect attempted to flee.,,one officer felt threatened and discharged his firearm, striking the suspect twice," said Police Chief Rick Hanson.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is now leading the investigation into the shooting.

ASIRT is the body that looks into all incidents which involve police use of force.
