Teams in Chestermere are hoping to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest hockey game ever.

The 40 men, including the father of tiny former cancer patient Diamond Marshall, will be playing at the Chestermere Recreation Centre from May 6 – 16th.

Organizers hope the hockey marathon will set records for most hours played, and for most money donated.

They want to raise $1.5 million for the Alberta Children's Hospital. All money raised will go to buying equipment for the hospital's Pediatric Cancer Research and Pediatric Intensive Care units.

"We can make a difference," says event organizer Alex Halat, "We are already surpassing our goal of what we wanted to raise before the opening ceremonies. We are now at $600,000 to give to the Alberta Children's Hospital."

If teams here manage to break the hockey marathon record, it may not stand for long.

The current record is held by teams in Edmonton's Sherwood Park. 39 men and one woman played hockey there last year for 240 hours, and raised more than $1.3 million for cancer research.

There's now a north-south rivalry brewing, and the Sherwood Park teams may be gearing up to break whatever record Chestermere sets this month.
