The National Music Centre is honouring the memory of Calgary business leader, Arlene Flock McKen, by renaming a lounge at Studio Bell after her.
McKen was the owner of Flagworks and was named one of the top 100 most powerful women in Canada by the Women's Executive Network in 2013.
She passed away in 2014 and Andrew Mosker from the National Music Centre says she was a trail blazer.
“She was a booster of our city on so many different elements from the Calgary Stampede to a number of different charities. She was a real leader and a strong advocate for diversifying the economy in this province,” said Mosker. “Her contributions to this city are immense and to have a space named in perpetuity after her in this particular space, in the Cloud Lounge, is a very fitting memory so we are very grateful to all the donors who came together to support this incredible gift.”
Friends, family and an anonymous donor contributed $1.8 million to support the music centre and the space on the fifth floor of the facility will now officially be called The Arlene Flock McKen Cloud Lounge.
The lounge will serve as a gathering space and offers amazing views of the centre’s interior.
“The space is a really stunning space here at the National Music Centre. It’s a place where the building comes together, architecturally, and what’s exciting about that is how it relates to Arlene, is that she was really great at bringing people together, so this space and the stunning views that it has is a wonderful place for people to gather to celebrate, to grieve, to plan and all wrapped in the lovely power and medium called music,” said Mosker.
