Mayor Nenshi and Cal Wenzel have settled out of court over a defamation lawsuit.

Wenzel filed the lawsuit against Nenshi in 2013, claiming the defamation and seeking six million dollars in damages.

In the settlement, Nenshi retracted and apologized for statements and characterizations he made about Wenzel in April and October of 2013. He recognized that comments made by Wenzel in 2010 did not constitute a violation of election laws. He also said he did not intend to suggest that Wenzel was the head of or involved in a criminal organization.

Wenzel said in the agreement that he regrets any negative statements that might have done harm to Nenshi’s reputation. He also said he never intended to create a chilling effect on politicians by filing the lawsuit.

The settlements stated that both parties decided it was in the best interest of all Calgary residents that the lawsuit be settled without costs.

Neither Wenzel nor Nenshi will comment on the case.
