Friends and family members of eight snowmobilers killed in an avalanche near Fernie on Sunday are being remembered Tuesday.

The final body was recovered from the slide site on Tuesday morning. None of the men survived the deadly slide.

The body of the last missing man was buried up to five feet below the surface and was discovered by searchers using probe sticks.

One of the survivors joined the rescue crews to help them pinpoint the area where the body might be found.

The bodies of seven others were discovered by search and rescue crews on Monday but the search was called off early because of severe weather conditions.

The snowmobilers were part of a larger group that was caught by two slides in a narrow alpine bowl in the Harvey Pass area which is about 40 kilometres south of Fernie.

Three men survived the slides and were treated in hospital and released.

The victims have been identified as:

Kane Rusnak (30)

Warren Rothel (33)

Michael Stier (20)

Len Stier (45)

Blayne Wilson ( 26)

Kurt Kabel (28)

Thomas Talarico (32)

Danny Bjarnason (28)

Searchers headed back to the slide site Monday morning to try and locate Bjarnason.

They set off a series of explosions to reduce the avalanche risk before trying to dig him out.

Searchers were racing against the clock to beat another winter storm coming into the area.

Earlier in the day, Bjarnason's father-in-law said the family hadn't given up hope that he would be found alive.

"My hope, my prayer, is that Danny's out there and he's still doing okay," Randy Roberts told reporters in an emotional news conference.

Roberts said everyone in the group of snowmobilers knew the risks of the backcountry and was properly prepared.

He says the communities of both Fernie and Sparwood are providing support to the families, for which he is extremely grateful.

Two memorials for the victims are being planned for 7 p.m. Tuesday night.

One will take place at St. Michael's Parish and another at the Christian Community Centre in Sparwood.

A trust fund has now been set up to help families of the victims. Donations can be made at any CIBC branch using account number 03070 010 7573138.
