People die in backcountry avalanches every year.

The winter of 2003 will go down as one of the worst.

Eleven skiers were buried in an avalanche on the Durrand Glacier near Revelstoke. Four managed to dig themselves out but seven people, including one Calgarian, were killed.

Seven teenagers from the Calgary area were also killed that year.

They were part of a school group skiing in the Rogers Pass.

As a result of the tragedies, Parks Canada vowed to change its policies to help improve safety.

So far in 2008, a total of ten people have been killed in backcountry accidents in Alberta and B.C.
