Edmonton police said second degree murder charges are pending after a man died in an alleged assault at Clareview LRT station.

Officers responded to the call just before 2 p.m. on December 28 where they found a 29-year old man unconscious.

Police say the suspect, who fled, was caught quickly near the station.

The victim was taken to hospital in critical condition and passed away on December 30.

Officials say they believe the suspect and the victim knew each other.

Police have charged Jeremy Newborn, 29 with aggravated assault, but since the victim has succumbed to his injuries, those charges are expected to be upgraded to second degree murder.

Newborn made his first court appearance this morning.
