Police have charged a 36-year-old Calgary man in connection with the death of a woman whose body was found in a truck early Wednesday morning.

Police say the victim, 37-year-old Kathy Lynn Reid, died as a result of asphyxiation consistent with strangulation

Officers were called to 17 Avenue and 84 Street S.E. at about 4:40 a.m. by the driver of a truck who said his passenger had died.

He claimed that he and a woman had been taking drugs and the woman overdosed.

Police found the man in the driver's seat of a truck that was stopped at the side of the road. The woman was dead in the seat next to him.

Police say the pair knew each other and had been together since 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, traveling around Calgary and east of the city.

At some point in the night, police say the pair had an argument and the woman was fatally assaulted somewhere outside the city in the truck.  Several hours later police were called when the driver returned to the city.

James Edward Kruse, 36, has been charged with one count of first-degree murder.

He is expected in court on September 18.

This is Calgary's 25th homicide of the year.
