A new scam is making the rounds in the city that police say is targeting members of Calgary's South Asian community.

Police say the fraudsters are impersonating government authorities in Canada and the U.S. to extort money.

They say a number of people have been contacted by phone and told they need to wire money to cover up to three demands for payment from the Canada Revenue Agency, the CIA or other agencies with similar acronyms.

The fraudster tells the victim that police will come to their home, arrest them and put them in jail it they don’t meet the demands immediately.

Police say the scam has ramped up over the past few months, particularly in the past two weeks.

They say that they don’t make it a practice of going to people’s homes and arresting them on behalf of the Canada Revenue Agency and anyone who receives a call like this should not wire money to these people.

Those concerned about their taxes, should get in touch with the Canada Revenue Agency directly.

If you believe you have been a victim of this or any other fraud, contact police.
