There is a new national standard for testing ski and snowboard helmets.

The Canadian Standard Association announced on Tuesday the first recreational alpine and snowboarding helmet standard to help protect people on the slopes.

The move has the stamp of approval from most.

"Completely agree, 100 percent...it's so important," says parent Lynn Manum.

"Anything to help the consumer purchase a safer product and to raise awareness, we're all for it...I believe this is great news," says Patrick Breault, the manager of the ski and board school at Canada Olympic Park.

Helmets will now have to go through rigorous testing - shock absorption, helmet stability and retention system strength - to meet the CSA requirements.

Prior to Tuesday, the only safety rating for ski helmets was the American ASTM standard.

At this point, the standard is strictly voluntary which means manufacturers do not have to submit their products for testing.

The CSA hopes the new standard will help reduce the number of head injuries that happen on the slopes.
