A new petition has appeared online, calling for the Calgary Zoo to close down the Penguin Plunge, one of the facility’s most popular exhibits.

The call comes in the wake of the deaths of seven Humboldt penguins at the zoo last week.

On Thursday morning, a zoo keeper went into the penguin building and was shocked to see the birds drowned in one of the pools connected to the holding rooms.

22 Humboldt penguins were being held in a separate area while some renovations were being done on the exhibit.

Jamie Dorgan, the Director of Animal Care at the Zoo, said that some event occurred in the room where seven of the Humboldts were being held, but they aren’t sure what that is.

The petition, that already has over 1,900 signatures, aims to have the zoo find a new and appropriate habitat for the remaining penguins.
