A woman has been killed and two other people are in hospital with serious injuries after a crash in northeast Calgary early Friday morning.

Police say that four people were in the car when it crashed at Metis Trail and 64 Ave. N.E. at just after 2:30 a.m.

The 2007 Chevrolet Impala was southbound on Metis Tr. when the driver lost control and swerved from side to side for about 140 metres before the car left the road and smashed into a light standard.

Police say the pole entered the back seat of the vehicle. The Impala then spun off the pole and crashed into a pedestrian overpass ramp before coming to rest about 4 metres away.

A 30-year-old woman who was in the rear seat died at the scene.

A 28-year-old female and a 27-year-old male, who was thrown from the vehicle, were rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

The 19-year-old driver sustained minor injuries and charges are pending.

Police believe that speed and alcohol are factors in the crash.

Emergency crews and police responded to two other crashes where the drivers had been drinking on Thursday night.

A man was charged after police say he drove drunk down Sarcee Trail on bare rims.

And in a third incident, a man crashed his vehicle into a concrete median at Crowchild Trail and Kensington Rd. N.W.

It is believed he too was impaired at the time of the crash.

Police say it is frustrating because they do a lot to educate the public abut the dangers of drinking and driving.

"In Calgary we have the benefit of a year round checkstop. We field a checkstop four days a week, throughout the city. We have a checkstop bus. We have a mobile breathalizer unit," said CPS Insp. Michael Watterston.

Police say that so far this year, there have been five fatalities in four crashes and in three of those collisions, alcohol was a factor.
