Calgary police had to shut down a major route in the southwest for a long period of time to investigate a serious crash involving a stolen vehicle.

Police say the incident began when they were called at about 12:30 a.m. to a scene in a northeast parking lot for reports of a man assaulting a woman.

Once officers arrived, the couple got into a white Jeep Cherokee, reported stolen, and fled northbound in the southbound lanes of 52 Avenue.

Police say the fleeing suspects drove at a high rate of speed and nearly hit several marked police cars responding to the incident on several occasions.

HAWCS was dispatched to follow the fleeing suspects, who were recorded reaching speeds of 140 to 180 km/h, running red lights and narrowly missing a number of other vehicles on the road.

At about 2:00 a.m., police ground units spotted the vehicle and suspects in the parking lot of a downtown casino attempting to steal another vehicle.

Officers moved in to make an arrest, but the suspects tried to flee again. reaching speeds of 140 km/h on the rims of the Jeep, before losing control and crashing into a business in the 5200 block of Macleod Trail.

Police say two people were in the vehicle at the time but only found a woman trapped inside the wreckage when they got to the scene.

Another suspect, a man, fled the area but was arrested a few blocks away with the help of the Canine Unit.

The woman was extricated from the vehicle by firefighters and taken to Foothills Hospital in stable non-life threatening condition.

The man suffered just minor injuries in the crash.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident and say charges are pending against the male driver.

It isn't known if there will be any charges against the woman.

Macleod Trail between 46 and 58 Avenue S.W. was closed for over two hours as the vehicle was removed from the building.
