Police say a crash on Deerfoot Trail shut down the northbound lanes of the route for several hours and sent two people to hospital on Sunday.

Emergency crews were called to the incident at about 1:30 p.m.

Officials say that a car had stopped on the shoulder of the highway, but a portion of the vehicle was still in the lane and a dump truck, hauling a load of soil, needed to swerve to avoid hitting the car.

The driver of the dump truck lost control in the manoeuvre and tipped over.

In all, four vehicles and 10 people were involved in the crash. Two people, a man in his 60s, the driver of the dump truck, and a man in his 20s were taken to hospital in serious but non-life threatening condition.

The highway was closed for northbound drivers until 6:00 p.m.
