An 18-year-old man is dead and a suspect is being questioned by police following an early Sunday morning stabbing at a northwest apartment building that houses at-risk young people.

EMS spokesperson Adam Loria says emergency crews responding to the building, near the intersection of Northmount Drive and 19 Street Northwest, at approximately 1:30 a.m. An EMS crew located an injured adult male and transported him to hospital in critical, life threatening injuries.

The victim’s stab wounds to his upper torso proved fatal and he passed away in hospital.

Police, including HAWCS and members of the K-9 unit, scoured the neighbourhood and located a person of interest in connection to the stabbing.

“The man in custody is a person of interest,” said CPS Duty Staff Sergeant Ryan Jepsen. “We’re not certain of his involvement, if any at all.”

Jepsen says police are interviewing the suspect and several witnesses.It is not known how many people were inside the apartment at the time of the attack or if the victim was a resident.

The identity of the deceased has not been released. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

The building, operated by the McMan Youth Family and Community Services Association, offers housing to youth between the ages of 16 and 24 years old.

The CPS Homicide Unit is leading the investigation into the man's death.
