The Ivor Strong Bridge on Deerfoot Trail is getting much needed maintenance work, but it will cause headaches for commuters.

Work began on Monday and will include replacing expansion joints on the bridge that stretches over the Bow River southeast of Anderson Road and Bow Bottom Trail. Work is expected to go around the clock to speed up completion of the project.

The city says commuters should add an extra 30 minutes to the rush hour drive on the Deerfoot, as the six lane roadway will be cut down to four lanes. Both north and southbound traffic will be affected, and fines for speeding through the construction zone will be double.

Construction on the bridge will go until July.
