A more than 20 per cent hike in fees and registration costs is angering Alberta paramedics.

In June, the Alberta College of Paramedics increased registration renewal from $425 to $525, saying increased business expenses prompted the hike.

But paramedics say there is no clear explanation of where the extra million dollars would go.

“We feel pretty blindsided by this one,” said Cameron Heenan, paramedic. “The college is hiding behind the economic times in the province are rough, and they need more money because of that, but at the same time we need that money to stay in the homes. And we need to make sure where that money is going in the college.”

More than 1,100 paramedics signed a petition asking to retract the increase, and have also written to Alberta Health, but the government says it will not get involved.
