A 21-year-old man from Calgary had died after suffering a fall while hiking in British Columbia on Thursday.

Golden-Field RCMP say the unnamed man was hiking with a group of friends in the alpine above the Little Yoho backcountry camping area when it's believed he lost his footing and suffered a fall of approximately 200 metres.

Members of the hiking party activated a personal locator beacon. A passing Canadian Forces Search & Rescue helicopter crew responded to the scene. The crew transported all four of the hikers, including the injured member, to Golden, B.C. where RCMP members and an EMS crew met the aircraft.

The injured man succumbed to his injuries en route to Golden.

The identity of the deceased has not been released. The British Columbia Coroner's Service has launched an investigation into the death.
