A Calgary mother rang in the New Year with an additional $8.1 million thanks to a winning ticket in the December 28 Lotto/649 drawing.

Kim Kelly originally underestimated the amount of her winnings after a visit to a ticket checking machine.

“I checked it, and I thought there was an error,” laughs Kelly. The lottery winner misread the display and assumed she was entitled to approximately $8,000.

“I was quite happy about that.”

Kelly had her son verify her winning numbers online and he realized his mother was in for a surprise. The ticket had all six numbers correct and Kelly would share the $16.3 million jackpot.

Kelly plans to use her winnings to help her family and to travel.

The winning ticket was purchased at the Mac’s Convenience Store in the southwest community of Glamorgan. Kelly shares the top prize with the owner of a ticket bought in Winnipeg.
