Family members have identified one of the victims of a deadly highway crash northeast of Calgary on Tuesday morning.

Jonathan Sobol was the head chef at Starbelly Restaurant in southeast Calgary and he is being remembered as a wonderful person and a talented chef.

The 33-year-old also made a number of television appearances, including on CTV Morning Live Calgary.

His sister told CTV Calgary that she believes he was heading out to a farm north of the city.

At around 9:30 a.m., emergency crews were called to the scene of a multi-vehicle crash at Highway 9 and Township Road 270.

Officials say the collision involved a sedan, semi-tractor trailer unit and a cube van.

EMS spokesperson Adam Loria says nothing could be done for the men and they died at the scene.

“They were determined deceased on scene and there was no resuscitation attempt just based on the injuries sustained,” he said. “Paramedics did transport, however, to hospital a male who was an occupant of the cube van. He was believed to be in his 20s. He suffered from minor injuries, considered stable and in non-life threatening condition.”

Loria says two other men were assessed at the scene, a passenger in the cube van and the driver of the semi-truck. They were not injured and did not need to be taken to hospital.

RCMP are still investigating the cause of the crash but have not ruled out anything so far.

Highway 9 was closed for a majority of the day on Tuesday but it has since reopened.

Starbelly Restaurant, where Sobol worked, was closed on Wednesday due to ‘unforeseen circumstances’.

The establishment released the following statement on Wednesday morning:

“On the morning of August 30, 2016, we lost a dear friend and extraordinary talent, Chef Jonathan Sobol. Jonathan was involved in a highway car accident on the outskirts of the city while visiting a local farm. The collision took his life immediately. We express our deepest condolences to the Sobol family at this very difficult time.

Jonathan was deeply committed to his community using his many talents to educate and support children and youth. His tireless work with the Alberta Children’s Hospital, South Health Campus, and Haysboro School touched many lives. He was an advocate for supporting local farmers and producers, a passion that could be found both in and out of the kitchen.

In lieu of this tragic and sudden loss to the Starbelly family, the restaurant will be closed on August 31. In honor of Jonathan and all that he brought to the restaurant and to the Calgary community, Starbelly will re-open with regular business hours on September 1.

We have experienced such a great loss but his memory will live on through the culinary art he created for so many Calgarians.”

Simon Dunn is a culinary instructor at SAIT and says Sobol was committed to giving back to the community.

“His passion for food was unsurpassed, I think he was, just took all criticism or critique and came back even stronger. His desire and passion to learn were really unparalleled,” said Dunn. “I feel like my community, my, the culinary community has lost someone that was doing some really brilliant work for us and I hope that there’s a lasting legacy for him.”

The other victim of the crash has not been identified.
