A Calgary senior is still recovering in hospital after he was attacked in a downtown alleyway earlier this month and a 19-year-old man is now facing charges.

Police were called to the 100 block of 2 Avenue S.E. at about 8:30 a.m. on July 8 for reports of a man in medical distress.

Officers found an 83-year-old man lying in an alley with significant injuries and he was taken to hospital in critical condition where he remains.

A public plea for information to identify a person of interest, who was captured by CCTV, was issued the next day and police received a tip from the public that led them to identify the man.

On Tuesday, a man was arrested in connection to the case and officers found an imitation firearm and 3.9 grams of cocaine on him.

On Wednesday, officers executed a search warrant on a residence in the 200 block of Doverview Cresent S.E. and seized a number of items including a loaded 38 caliber Smith and Wesson revolver.

Mark Angelo Julom, 19, of Calgary, is charged with:

  • Aggravated assault
  • Possession weapon dangerous
  • Carry concealed weapon
  • Breach of recognizance
  • Possession of a controlled substance
  • Careless storage of a firearm
  • Possession of loaded firearm
  • Possess firearm without license
  • Possess firearm with deface serial number

Julom is expected to appear in court on the charges on Thursday, July 21, 2016.
