The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is expanding a recall of ground beef sold from a Costco warehouse location in Lethbridge.

The CFIA is warning people against eating Kirkland Signature Brand lean ground beef.

Officials say the product may be contaminated with E. coli, potentially life-threatening bacteria.

The meat, which was packaged in various sizes, has a sell-by date of October 8.

The CFIA says there have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of the product.

Food contaminated with E. coli may not look or smell spoiled, but eating products contaminated with the bacteria may cause serious and potentially life-threatening illness.

Symptoms include severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhoea, while some people may have seizures or strokes and some may need blood transfusions and kidney dialysis.

E. coli can also cause permanent kidney damage and death.

Last week, Costco recalled Kirkland Signature Brand organic lean ground beef for the same reason.

The company is working with the agency to recall the product and the CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
