Whether times are good or bad, there are always those who suffer from food insecurity. These days, that number is higher than ever. That’s why churches run their own food banks, like Holy Name Church in Killarney.

“There's huge need,” says Brenda Jack with the Holy Name Church food bank. “Everybody always thinks it's the southwest area, but there's an awful lot of subsidized housing in this southwest area so we absolutely have a big need in this area."

Brenda runs a team of volunteers who make the Holy Name Cares food bank a reality, and Brenda leads the charge by making the church’s food bank program a priority.

“Over the years I've worked with a lot of different volunteers and I feel that a lot of the volunteers that are most successful work behind the scenes, and Brenda is one of those people,” says Carmen Lopez, who also volunteers at the church. “For the years that I've worked with her she's worked tirelessly doing things that people don't realize need to be done.”

Father Mario Basque is the pastor at Holy Name Church, and says when he came to the parish in 2013 he was impressed by Brenda’s leadership.

“It is well organized and there's leadership so people are drawn to that,” he said. “And okay just tell me what to do and they know specifically what to do they don't have to guess or think, everything is done and they do it and that makes a huge, huge difference.”

For all she does to help Holy Name Cares meet the needs of the community, Brenda Jack is our Inspired Albertan this week.
