Members of the public were able to get a look at what the new Central Library will look like when it’s finished.

The drawings, from the architect firms of Snohette and Dialog, were released during a meeting on Thursday night.

The new building, which will cost $245M, will house 600,000 books, a state-of-the-art theatre, and quiet space.

Michael Brown, with the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation says the new library will be so many things. “It becomes a space that’s about so many things and libraries, yes, they are evolving but they have always been at the centre port of our community.”

Druh Farrell, Ward 7 councillor, says the design is very affordable when compared to other libraries around the world. “The city contributed $175M and the CMLC contributed $70M, so it’s very affordable in comparison.”

The new Central Library will incorporate a section of the LRT line.

More design sketches are expected to be released later this month.

The library is scheduled to be completed by 2018.
