Construction is underway at Calgary’s newest haven for abused youth and their families in the northwest.

Following months of planning and preparation, dozens of workers are now on site at the Child Advocacy Centre, the first of its kind in Canada.

The 24,000 square foot facility will house specially designed areas for children, teens, and families, seven therapy offices, five forensic interview rooms, five monitoring rooms, two medical rooms, a doctor’s office, and two officers for nurses.

The centre will also include open concept office space for teams from Child and Family Services, Calgary Police, Crown prosecutors, volunteers, and a training centre.

There will be approximately 70 people working at the CAC when it is completed in the fall.

The centre begins construction the day after a Statistics Canada report on crime show that the only offences to show an increase were homicide, sexual offences against children, child pornography, criminal harassment, impaired driving, and most drug offences.

Officials at the CAC are confident that the new facility will positively impact that increase.
