A one day trip to the Magic Kingdom made for an unforgettable experience for about 150 southern Alberta children on Wednesday thanks to Dreams Take Flight Calgary.

The non-profit charity provides trips to Disneyland for children who are terminally and chronically ill as well as for those with special needs.

The 300 volunteers and children were put into groups of 12 and they were all treated to a full day at the California theme park with a few extras.

“It brings out happiness and makes your dreams come true with princesses and other things like Mickey Mouse and the Disney characters,” said Joye Modi.

“My grandma told me and I thought it was a great experience to go here and I don’t know if I would have ever went here without this and it’s been a really great day so far,” said Bradley Beswick.

“It’s kind of like a dream, these people take you to Disneyland, so you can have that experience and you get lots of free stuff on the plane,” said Marissa McGillis.

Dreams Take Flight raises funds through corporate and private donations and organizers say Air Canada and a number of other sponsors step in every year to make the trip possible.

“We're very fortunate in Calgary, we have other people that fundraise for us, Cardel Homes has a big golf tournament, Pharmasave has a golf tournament, and lots of oil companies just write cheques for us,” said Jan Cavney.

The trip costs the charity about $250,000 and the children are also given a gift certificate to buy a few mementos.

“Lots of these kids never, ever get any money to just go buy something for themselves so we do that, we also buy them a stuffed Mickey, it’s on the seats when they get back to the airplane. We buy them Mickey ears and we have them specially embroidered with their names on them,” said Cavney.

The groups try to hit as many rides as they can in eight hours and by the end of the day the children are ready for a restful flight home.

Dreams Take Flight Calgary has been making the trips since 1993 and has chapters in a number of other Canadian cities.
