Calgary crews are back at the scene on Centre Street where a building caught fire on Sunday evening, forcing 16 people from their homes.

Thick plumes of smoke were seen coming from the back unit on the second floor of the building where another fire broke out on Sunday evening.

Battalion Chief Al Magwood says they received reports of another fire at the building at about 6 a.m. on Monday.

"We had a second fire at the residence from last night. When crews arrived, they found a heavy volume of smoke coming from the second floor apartment."

Magwood says crews began an aggressive attack because of the damage the building sustained on Sunday night. "The interesting thing is that the fire from last night was limited to the bottom level and exterior of the building while this fire was found on the second floor at the rear of the structure which was not involved last night."

He says that no one was injured in the second fire.

Carol Henke, public information officer with the Calgary Fire Department, says they are looking at all of the possibilities for the investigation. "It's way too early to say. Investigators are on scene looking at all the possibilites, because it appears there may be two different points of origin right now."

Crews are now considering the fires are suspicious, given the fact that there were two separate fires at the same building.

Fire crews say they were originally alerted when smoke was spotted coming from the deck of a four-plex unit Sunday evening at about 8 p.m.

They say the fire likely started underneath the wooden stairs of one of the units.

While the flames spread quickly, crews were able to keep up and soon extinguished the fire.

Just two units suffered damage from heat and smoke and all of the occupants of the affected homes were safe.
