The Calgary Fire Department says that a functioning smoke alarm made the difference in a house fire that broke out on Sunday evening in the northeast.

At about 7:00 p.m., crews were called to a home in the 100 block of Castlebrook Way N.E. for reports of a fire.

Crews driving to the scene noticed a large amount of smoke coming from the home before they even arrived at the scene.

The first crews who arrived also found a lot of smoke pouring from the open front door.

The fire, which was found in a basement bedroom, was quickly knocked down.

Officials say the fire damage was contained to that one room but there was extensive smoke damage throughout the building.

All four residents of the home, three children and one adult, were able to get out safely because of a fully-functional smoke alarm. No one was injured in the fire.

A CFD fire investigator is working on the cause of the blaze. There is no estimate on the cost of damages to the home.

Fire officials would like to remind residents about the importance of a working smoke alarm.

All Calgarians should make sure that they have a smoke alarm on every level of their home and near sleeping areas.

Alarms should be tested once a month and the batteries, if applicable, should be changed once a year.

Both hard-wired and battery powered smoke alarms should be changed every 10 years.
