The mild temperatures Calgarians have enjoyed throughout the holiday season will soon be nothing more than a memory.

Environment Canada has issued a flash freeze warning for the city as a rapidly moving cold front will drop temperatures well below zero degrees Celsius late Friday night.

The frigid temperatures will be amplified by a bitterly strong wind from the north and up to five centimetres of snow.

City of Calgary crews are preparing for slick Saturday road conditions by applying an anti-icing agent to known trouble spots and a mixture of salt and gravel on priority routes.

The return of winter conditions are expected to make for hazardous highway travel with blowing snow reducing visibility.

Anyone with highway travel plans is encouraged to check road conditions with Alberta 511 before departing.
