The mild temperatures over the last few weeks have prompted a local golf course to open early and players were keen to get in a few rounds while the weather holds.

Fox Hollow in the city’s northeast opened on temporary greens and tees on Tuesday and head pro, Greg Griffith, says golfers just want to get going.

“People are trying to book, they want to book seven, fourteen, days in advance now, they’re gung-ho, they’re ready to go so they’re having fun, the phone hasn’t stopped ringing so I would imagine by the end of the day, most of the week will be booked up,” he said.

Griffith says they’ve been getting calls from golfers for the past two weeks and that they were just waiting for the course to dry out a bit.

“We want to make sure there’s no ice and snow and mud. We still want people to enjoy themselves out there, not come in with their feet full of mud and whatnot and it has to be safe on the paths and stuff,” said Griffith.

All 18 holes are open and officials say they will open fully in late March or early April if Mother Nature cooperates.

“It’s great. We’re really enjoying it. It’s a lot of fun, everybody calling in, everybody walking in, they’re just excited,” said Griffith. “The ground is firm so the drivers are going to go a long way so people with their new drivers are going to be real happy.”

“I think it’s awesome, going out this time of year. The weather, it’s unbelievable,” said one man.

“It’s good for those early players that like to get out here and get some practice in before the real season starts,” said another.

The last time the course was able to open in February was in 2012.
