The trial of a father and stepmother is underway as the couple faces first degree murder charges in connection to the death of the man’s six-year-old daughter.

Spencer Jordan and Marie Magoon are accused of killing Meika Jordan in 2011. The girl’s death was the result of blunt force trauma but the Crown alleges Meika suffered numerous abuses during the four days leading up to her passing.

According to the Crown, the couple told doctors Meika had suffered a fall down a flight of stairs but medical experts say the girl’s injuries were too severe to have resulted from a tumble and were consistent with extensive abuse. An investigation revealed Meika had been dragged up and down the stairs, thrown, burned with a lighter and her head had been slammed into the floor. Chunks of Meika’s hair were missing when the unconscious girl was rushed to hospital.

Meika’s mother Kyla Woodhouse was not permitted in the courtroom on Monday as she is scheduled to testify on Tuesday.

“To know it was done at the hands of somebody else is the worst feeling in the world and that’s why we’re here today,” said Kyla from outside the courthouse where dozens gathered in a show of support for Meika. “To get that justice for her that (Meika) truly deserves because she can’t be here herself.”

Stepfather Brian Woodhouse sat through the recount of the grisly details including an audio recording of Marie Magoon’s phone call to Healthlink.

“I sat in that courtroom today with strangers that were in tears around me,” said Brian. “It brings you back to the first day all over again.”

The trial is scheduled to last six weeks.
